High School Basketball

‘Once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.’ Meet Frederick Douglass’ new basketball coaches.

New leadership is in place for the boys’ and girls’ basketball programs at Frederick Douglass High School in Lexington.

During a press conference at the school’s gymnasium on Tuesday, Jason Moseley was introduced as the new boys’ coach and DJ Moberly as the new girls’ coach. Both bring a wealth of experience to the Broncos’ bench.

Moseley, a Louisville native, returns to Kentucky from North Carolina where he coached Rocky River High School to a 24-7 record and an appearance in the state championship.

Moberly cut his teeth as a high school assistant at Bryan Station and Tates Creek before spending the last four years as head coach at Southern Middle School in Lexington.

“When we came (to Frederick Douglass) and won a middle school championship in 2018 I knew then I wanted to be here, I wanted to be part of this program,” Moberly said.

The chance to return to Kentucky played a major role in Moseley’s decision to take the reigns as the boys’ head coach.

“Being from the state of Kentucky, the opportunity to move back closer to home and family and be in Lexington was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for me,” Moseley said. “As well, when you hear about Frederick Douglass High School you hear just nothing but great things … You look around and the atmosphere is unbelievable. So the opportunity to come to this high school was just something I couldn’t pass up.”

A former assistant coach at Paul Laurence Dunbar, Moseley knows all about the challenge of competing in the 11th Region. He plans to employ a frenetic style of play in pursuit of region and state championships.

“I (know about) the fast tempo and the type of players you have to have to be successful,” Moseley said. “I feel like they’ve got that here, for us to get up and down and cause a lot of havoc. We’ll look to get all over the court … and cause a lot of chaos.”

The Broncos’ boys’ team is coming off a 21-12 season in which it won the program’s first 42nd District championship and made a run to the 11th Region Tournament semifinals. The Douglass girls struggled last year, going 4-27. The program has yet to post a winning record in its first three seasons.

Douglass’ boys are currently scheduled to tip off the season Nov. 28 against Clay County in the Legacy Nissan Classic at North Laurel. The Broncos’ girls are slated to begin the season Nov. 23 at Bourbon County.
