Coach: Jan Perkins (first year)
Key contributors (with Perkins’ comments):
1. Shay Wilson: 5-8 senior small forward who’s “an excellent leader, hard worker and a defensive specialist. She’s the most vocal. If you watch practice or games you’ll see her as the leader.”

2. Lauren Miller: 5-9 senior power forward/center who Perkins also expects to be a team leader.
3. Carolyn Nsimpasi: 5-5 junior guard who Perkins calls an “excellent defender.”
Others to watch: Desirae Brown (5-9, junior) is a power forward who should provide good scoring from the post. Perkins noted that Brown has a “great work ethic.” Shania Taylor (5-5, freshman) and Kira Turner (5-5, senior) are both guards who can score and defend.
Games you gotta see: The Commodores travel to Lexington Christian on Dec. 8 then host the Eagles on Feb. 9. LCA was the only Lexington team Tates Creek scored a win against last season, knocking off the Eagles on the road 52-41 before dropping the rematch by one point in the 43rd District Tournament.
On what she first noticed when taking over the team: “The girls work really hard, their effort is phenomenal. That’s the first thing that impressed me when I first came on board. ... They’re willing to learn and they’re flexible.”
On what would constitute a successful season: “I think we’ll be in the hunt for a district championship, I really do. I’m new and they’re new to me but if there’s buy-in, if I’m flexible and I coach the way I’m supposed to I think we can go far in the district and hopefully make the region. I’m hoping for a winning season, I’d love that.”
On her system: “We’re gonna be fast. We want to be man-to-man, a lot of pressing, get the ball ahead as quickly as possible. We should be fun to watch.”
Shay Wilson: On how the team is acclimating to a new head coach: “It’s tough, you’ve got to buy into a whole new system. You’ve got to forget everything you learned last year. But Coach is doing really good, we’re hanging in there.”
“It feels like we all want to win, where last year I felt like only a couple of people wanted to win. Now I feel like we’re all on the same page, reading the same book at least.”
