Boys’ Sweet Sixteen won’t include top-ranked CovCath

First five slots claimed: Bellarmine signee Ben Weyer scored 22 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and blocked seven shots and No. 8 Newport Central Catholic knocked off top-ranked Covington Catholic 52-47 in the 9th Region finals at Northern Kentucky University to earn the first spot in the Boys’ Sweet Sixteen. Weyer, a 6-6 forward, was aided by Brennan Hall’s 15 points. Cole VonHandorf led Covington Catholic with 25 points and five rebounds.

Four other spots in the Sweet Sixteen field were claimed Monday night, including the 11th Region berth by No. 2 Paul Dunbar, which won 51-39 against Scott County, ranked 11th in Dave Cantrall’s Rating the State.

Doss, tied with Scott County for 11th, defeated No. 17 Bullitt East 58-54 for its second straight 6th Region title. No. 6 South Laurel rolled to a 69-43 win over Clay County in the 13th Region . No. 12 Christian County defeated Hopkinsville 82-72 in the 2nd.

Region semifinals: Mason County, which got 25 points from Antwabon Williams, edged Paris 67-63 in the 10th Region. They’ll play Augusta, a 63-49 winner over host Montgomery County, in the finals.
