Tates Creek’s Warner named district player of the year

Tates Creek running back Laron Warner was voted Class 6A District 8 player of the year by the Kentucky Football Coaches Association. Players and coaches were announced on Saturday.

Warner, who rushed for 1,007 yards and scored 14 touchdowns for the 9-3 Commodores, was the only Lexington player honored. Scott County running back Brice Fryman was named Class 6A District 7 player of the year.

Others in the area named district players of the year included Paris running back Matthew Barber (Class 1A District 5), Danville running back D’Mauriae VanCleave (Class 2A District 7), Western Hills running back Wandale Robinson (Class 3A District 4) and Madison Southern running back Carter Smith (Class 5A District 6).

Area coaches honored included Danville’s Clay Clevenger, Boyle County’s Chuck Smith (Class 3A, District 4), East Jessamine’s Mike Bowlin (Class 4A District 5), Scott County’s Jim McKee (Class 6A District 7) and Clark County’s Oliver Lucas (Class 6A District 8).

Winners will be recognized at halftime of their respective class’s state finals at Kroger Field this week.
