Coaches name their Mr. Football and Coach of the Year for 2019
The Kentucky Football Coaches Association has selected Covington Catholic’s Michael Mayer as its Mr. Football for the 2019 season.
KFCA voters also selected Pikeville’s Chris McNamee as Coach of the Year.
This is the second statewide honor for Mayer, a 6-foot-6 tight end/linebacker who helped lead his team to this year’s Class 5A state championship. Last week, the Notre Dame commit was named Gatorade Player of the Year.
Mayer played a pivotal role in Covington Catholic’s 14-7 state finals win over Frederick Douglass, converting a fourth-and-2 with a 37-yard pass reception that set up what would be the winning score. He led the Colonels with 970 receiving yards and 15 touchdowns as a tight end and scored on two TD runs. He also led CovCath with 99 tackles as a linebacker with 1.5 sacks and 7.5 tackles for a loss.
This is the second time the KFCA has named its own Mr. Football, an honor separate from the longer-running award of the same name voted on by Kentucky’s Associated Press. The Associated Press’s Mr. Football will be announced at a later date.
McNamee led Pikeville to a 14-0 record, including a dominating 43-0 win in the Class A state championship game.
The KFCA said members and non-members of its organization were allowed to vote this season. The winners were selected from the organization’s class-by-class players and coaches of the year, which were announced ahead of each respective state championship at Kroger Field last weekend. Last year’s Mr. Football, Wandale Robinson of Western Hills, was announced during the state finals, which left out the possibility of taking a championship performance into account for the final vote.
Lexington Catholic’s Beau Allen received the Louisville Quarterback’s Club 27th annnual Paul Hornung Award earlier this month.
