Bryan Station avoids ‘trap’ with late score; Sayre, Scott County remain undefeated

Highlights from Week 4 of the 2020 high school football season around Kentucky:

Bryan Station 20, Henry Clay 10: Coming off back-to-back wins with an important district game against Clark County next week, Bryan Station could have fallen into a classic “trap game” against city rival Henry Clay on Friday night.

The Blue Devils (0-2) would be looking to redeem themselves after a stinging loss in their home opener last week and the Defenders, ranked in almost everyone’s Class 6A top 10 after starting 2-1, could have had a letdown.

“It’s different now. They’ve turned that corner,” Bryan Station Coach Phillip Hawkins said. “They’re trying to win everything now. I mean, they could have laid down tonight. They didn’t.”

As Hawkins said, it wasn’t easy. Their first possession went -23 yards. They trailed 3-0 at halftime and 10-7 in the fourth quarter. They turned the ball over on downs on four straight series, including a 79-yard drive to the 1-yard line after the second-half kickoff.

But it was that last drive after some halftime adjustments that flipped the switch, Hawkins said. A quarterback change sparked the offense.

Mikaleb Coffey, a Scott County transfer finally ruled eligible Friday morning, stepped behind center and led back-to-back touchdown drives to put the Defenders (3-1) in front. His 2-yard run late in the third quarter put Station up 7-3 and his 18-yard pass to Damin Green helped them retake the lead 14-10 with 1:30 left in the game.

“He changed the whole look of our team,” Hawkins said. “He can run the ball and throw the ball. … We just spread them out and went to empty (no running backs in the backfield) and let this kid (Coffey) run it and throw it. It went pretty good.”

A Dadrien Taylor interception return for a TD with 37 seconds left capped the scoring. Bryan Station’s Amodeus Taylor had 118 yards rushing. Blake Van Horn scored the TD for Henry Clay.

Johnson Central 49, Clay County 6: Golden Eagles Coach Jim Matney notched the 300th win of his career.

Asked what it means, he laughed and said, “It means I’m old.”

“No, I’m very thankful and very appreciative that God’s blessed me with good health and longevity,” he added. “I think, more than anything it means that somebody from my neck of the woods can make it. No matter where you come from, you can make it.”

Scott County 28, Ryle 18: Campton Martin scored four touchdowns, one in each quarter as the Cardinals (4-0) outlasted visiting Ryle. The Cards’ wing-T attack usually devastates opponents and Montago Jones did rack up 155 yards, but Friday the pass game connected, with quarterback Zane Patton finding Martin on stunning scoring throws of 56 yards in the second quarter and 28 yards to seal the win in the fourth.

Sayre 28, Holy Cross (Covington) 14: Cole Pennington threw for 246 yards and three TDs and had two interceptions in his role as a defensive safety to help the Spartans (4-0) remain undefeated. Trey Dennis caught all the scoring throws and had 127 yards receiving. Jackson Marshall’s 47-yard interception return for a TD staked Sayre to a 14-0 lead in the second quarter.

Somerset 42, Hazard 13: Kentucky commit Kaiya Sheron threw for two TDs, ran for another and had an interception as a defender as the Briar Jumpers moved to 4-0. Chase Doan opened the scoring for Somerset with a 41-yard run. Mikey Garland added a 3-yard run and 17-yard catch for scores. Sheron’s other TD throw went to Gavin Stevens for 30 yards. Hazard (0-4) got 103 yards rushing and a TD pass and run from Max Johnson.

Collins 50, Anderson County 14: Joe Lucas tossed two touchdowns each to Kenyon Goodin and Darius Evans as the Titans (4-0) cruised after some early resistance. Anderson’s Isaiah Fitzpatrick scored a pair of long touchdowns in the first quarter as the host Bearcats (0-4) kept it even early. But Collins scored 36 unanswered with Henry Robbins tacking on a pair of TD runs, too.

Cooper 27, George Rogers Clark 26: Jeremiah Lee threw TD passes of 16 and 49 yards to Xavier Smith and ran for two more scores and the Jaguars (1-3) held on despite a second-half charge by the Cardinals (0-3). Clark couldn’t convert a two-point try to tie the game after a Jordan Manley 27-yard touchdown pass to Tate Spayd with 3:02 left. Jeremiah Lloyd-Mundy led the Cards with 120 yards rushing and a TD.

Madison Southern 34, East Jessamine 14: Cole Carpenter hit wide receiver Walter Smith for a pair of long TDs, threw an 82-yard bomb to Jonah Farnstrom and found Xavier Strothman for a 14-yard score as the Eagles (1-2) got a 34-0 lead before the Jags could answer. Turnovers proved costly for East Jessamine as Madison Southern’s defense got an interception and a fumble recovery in the half. Both led to scores.

Pulaski County 58, South Laurel 30: Quarterback Drew Polston went 39-of-47 for 481 yards and five TDs as the Maroons (3-1) got their second win in the district. Chandler Godby had two of those TD catches. Barek Williams scored three times, including a 6-yard run.

Danville 41, Mason County 7: The Admirals (3-0) dominated from the outset with Corydon Crawford scoring a 26-yard TD early and Sage Dawson pounding in a 1-yard keeper and tossing TD passes of 45 yards to Blake Jones and 25 yards to Crawford. Caleb Burns paced Danville on the ground with 138 yards and a score.

Elizabethtown 48, West Jessamine 13: The Panthers (4-0) got two interceptions, a fumble recovery, and TDs off both a punt return by T.J. Allen and a kickoff return by Kam Sherrard to remain undefeated. Sherrard also had a 46-yard TD run. Jacob Jones threw for 204 yards and two TDs for the Colts. Both scores went to Jackson Green, who had had 10 catchers for 142 yards.

Covington Catholic 45, Boone County 7: Caleb Jacob ran for a score and threw TD passes to Ethan Reardon and Isaiah Roedig in the Colonels (3-0) rout. Roedig opened the scoring with a 10-yard run. CovCath’s Ryan Schneider returned an interception 80 yards for a TD in the first half. Isiah Haynes scored for Boone (1-3).

Southwestern 28, North Laurel 12: Giddeon Brainard’s 21-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter and J.J. Hutchinson’s score late helped the Warriors (4-0) pull away for the district win. Southwestern QB Chandler Crabtree ran for one score and threw for another to Maison Hibbard. For North Laurel (2-2), Tucker Warren had a 10-yard TD pass to Gavin Hurst and Jacob Bowman scored from 9 yards out.

Paris 20, Bracken County 8: Jakari Ransom had a pair of TDs for the Panthers (1-2), including a 70-yard interception return for a score to help seal the win in the third quarter. Ransom’s other TD came off a 20-yard pass from Chase Puckett. Puckett had a 1-yard rushing TD.

Paintsville 43, Perry County Central 0: Jake Hyden and Harris Phelps each had a pair of rushing touchdowns as the Tigers (3-0) set the running clock with a mercy-rule lead just before half.

Russell 32, Simon Kenton 31 OT: Ethan Oborne caught a two-point conversion pass from Charlie Jachimczuk as the hot Red Devils (4-0) eschewed another tie and went for the win on their first possession of the extra period. Nathan Conley’s 5-yard run moments before matched Jayden Lawson’s 10-yard run for Simon Kenton as the Pioneers (2-2) got the ball to start the extra frame. Oborne has a 60-yard TD catch from Jachimczuk in the first quarter of the back-and-forth game.

Ashland Blazer 50, Raceland 15: Keontae Pittman rushed for 143 yards and four touchdowns, and Brett Mullins threw a pair of TD passes to JT Garrett in the Tomcats’ (2-0) blowout. Garrett also ran a score in.

Martin County 40, East Ridge 6: Branson Smith rushed for 100 yards and two TDs, and Jason Maynard had a TD pass to Parker Davis and a TD run for the Cardinals (3-1). Logan Procter and Dawson Mills also scored.

South Warren 10, Bowling Green 7: After three scoreless quarters, the Spartans (3-0) got a field goal from Eldar Dervisevic and a Caden Veltkamp 5-yard run and then held on against the Purples in their always-consequential district rivalry game. Bowling Green’s Javeius Bunton ran in a 3-yard touchdown to avoid the shutout at the end.

Trinity 48, St. Xavier 10: The Shamrocks overwhelmed the Tigers in Louisville’s most celebrated rivalry game, scoring via run, pass, two interception TDs and two punt return scores. Bradley West had a TD run and one of the punt returns, a 50-yarder for the Rocks. Michael Patterson and Kyle Feger had the pick-sixes.

Saturday’s game

Highlands 36, Conner 0: Charlie Noon ran for one TD and threw for another to Jason Noe on the Bluebirds rout to 2-2 on the season. Linebacker Sam Robinson recovered a fumble in the endzone and Dominic Robinson had a 5-yard TD run and a 46-yard punt return for a TD that capped the scoring before halftime.
