Hike! Your weekly guide to high school football
Friday's kickoffs
CITY GAMES
No. 8 Bryan Station (4-2) at Paul Laurence Dunbar (3-3), 7:30 p.m.: After winning its first three games this season, Dunbar has dropped three in a row, including a 25-12 loss at Madison Central last week. If the Bulldogs are to have a chance against Bryan Station, they'll need to control the ball and the clock like they did last year when they rushed for almost 500 yards and upset the 10th-rated Defenders 34-28. Bryan Station is going for its fourth win in a row over city teams, having beaten Lexington Catholic, Tates Creek and Lafayette. Andre Davis passed for 776 yards and 11 TDs in those three victories.
No. 10 Henry Clay (5-1) at No. 7 Scott County (6-0), 7:30 p.m.: Defending Class 6A champ Scott County has the state's longest winning streak — 21 in a row — and it has 21 consecutive victories over Lexington competition. The Cardinals are averaging 374 yards rushing, with Keith Guy and Theo Price leading the charge. Henry Clay is averaging 394 yards rushing, with Joquise Buford leading the attack. The Blue Devils came close to upsetting Scott County in the third round of the playoffs last year before falling 37-34.
No. 12 Lafayette (4-3) at Clark County (2-4), 7:30 p.m.: Clark County will have to contain the Generals' sophomore quarterback Walker Wood, who has thrown for 1,072 yards and 11 TDs, and rushed for 796 yards and 13 TDs. Likewise, Lafayette needs to check the Cardinals' senior quarterback Luke Sharrock, who has totaled 3,100 yards, and 27 TDs passing and running during the past two seasons.
Lexington Catholic (4-3) at Taylor County (2-4), 7:30 p.m.: Lexington Catholic hopes to build on the momentum generated by last week's victory over archrival Boyle County. The Knights' defense has been led by Chase Boling and Andy Hickey. Taylor County, under the direction of Dudley Hilton, has won two of its past three games.
Middlesboro (3-2-1) at Lexington Christian Academy (3-3), 7:30 p.m.: Middlesboro's ground game is led by Seth Barton and Ryan Pittman, while LCA's rushing attack is led by Nick Whitman. The Eagles had almost 400 yards against Paintsville last week, but three turnovers cost them in a 24-12 loss.
Tates Creek (3-4) at Madison Central (2-5), 7:30 p.m.: Defense has been the problem for both teams. Tates Creek has given up an average of 52 points in its past three losses. Madison Central has yielded an average of 50 points in its past four defeats.
TOP STATE GAMES
No. 5 St. Xavier (5-2) at No. 4 Male (6-0), 7:30 p.m.: St. X beat Trinity last week, but the Tigers face a bigger challenge in district rival Male. The Bulldogs beat St. X in the regular season and playoffs last year, and they might be even better this season.
Trinity (4-3) at No. 1 Manual (6-0), 7:30 p.m.: The Crimsons can certify their top rating by beating Trinity. Manual has lost 11 times in a row to the Shamrocks since beating them in 2003.
