2026 Breeders’ Cup at Keeneland: Tickets, economic impact and what else we know

Keeneland Race Course in Lexington will host the Breeders’ Cup World Championships of thoroughbred racing for the fourth time in 2026.

While many details are still being planned, a few key pieces of information were revealed Wednesday:

▪ When will it be?

The Breeders’ Cup will be at Keeneland on Oct. 30-31, 2026, although those dates are still pending approval from the Kentucky Horse Racing and Gaming Corporation.

▪ When will tickets go on sale?

Sign up at breederscup.com/future-host-site and you’ll be notified of important dates, such as when tickets go on sale. Ticket sales for the 2022 Breeders’ Cup at Keeneland opened on May 9 of that year.

▪ How much will tickets cost?

Keeneland offered a range of ticket options for previous Breeders’ Cups and will have some new ones this time, although those tiers have not yet been announced. In 2022, single-day ticket prices ranged from $75 to $504 on Friday, and $125 to $689 on Saturday. Two-day packages ranged from $200 to $1,568. All tickets will be sold in advance of the event.

▪ Will Keeneland have chalets and track-adjacent seating again?

Most likely. However, the anchor for the 2026 Breeders’ Cup will be the track’s new three-level Paddock Building, part of a nearly $100 million renovation expected to be completed this fall. The Paddock Building will provide new ticketed experiences for more than 1,000 fans during race meets, including traditional sit-down dining, new bar concepts, and access to a Paddock Lawn on the north side of the Saddling Paddock. How the building will be deployed for a Breeders’ Cup for the first time will be one of the highlights of the lead-up.

▪ How many tickets will be sold?

We don’t know yet. At previous Breeders’ Cups, Keeneland has augmented its traditional seating with chalets and tents outside the track and paddock. In 2015, the Friday races drew a crowd of 44,947, a record for Keeneland, topped by the Saturday crowd of 50,155. In 2020, fans could not attend because of the pandemic. In 2022, Keeneland attracted 39,851 fans on Friday and 45,973 on Saturday. That year, the track purposely capped sales at about 45,000 to create a more intimate atmosphere for race fans.

▪ Will there be events at the Red Mile again? Tailgating on the hill?

We don’t know yet but it seems likely.

▪ Will there be a festival downtown?

In previous years, the city coordinated days of activities leading up to the races at Keeneland, including concerts on the courthouse plaza.

▪ What’s the projected economic impact?

Unknown, but last time the boost was estimated at $81.8 million. Previous Breeders’ Cups, highlighted by champions such as American Pharoah and Flightline, attracted thousands of racing fans to Bluegrass hotel rooms, restaurants and local events.

▪ Will the Breeders’ Cup conflict with a UK home football game?

We don’t know because the 2026 Kentucky schedule isn’t set yet. In 2022, Kentucky played at Missouri on the Saturday of the Breeders’ Cup. In 2020, the Wildcats had the week off. In 2015, UK hosted Tennessee for a night game and drew a crowd of 60,886 for its 52-21 defeat.

What is Keeneland’s history with the Breeders’ Cup?

The two-day championships were held previously in Lexington in 2015, 2020 and 2022 and have always proven eventful. Keeneland’s inaugural Breeders’ Cup in 2015 featured Triple Crown winner American Pharoah completing horse racing’s “grand slam” by capturing the Breeders’ Cup Classic. The 2020 races were held without fans because of the COVID-19 pandemic. That led to the track again receiving the opportunity to host in 2022 when Flightline completed an undefeated career by winning the Classic.
