Kentucky Derby 2025 complete order of finish and payoffs at Churchill Downs

A rainsoaked Kentucky Derby Day came to a close with shiny new trio of winners on Saturday night.

Sovereignty roared past race favorite Journalism in the stretch to win the 151st Kentucky Derby by 1 1/2 lengths in front of 147,406 at Churchill Downs in Louisville.

The victory was a first for all of Sovereignty’s connections.

Trainer Bill Mott, 71, was previously credited with a victory when Country House captured the 2019 Kentucky Derby via disqualification but got to watch his own horse cross the finish line in front for the first time in the Run for the Roses on Saturday.

Jockey Junior Alvarado had made five previous Kentucky Derby starts but never finished better than fourth before Saturday.

And owner Godolphin Racing, headed by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai, at last realized its longheld dream of winning a Kentucky Derby.

The morning-line and race-time favorite, Journalism, ended up in second place in the 19-horse race with Baeza third.

The final margin was officially 1 1/2 lengths, with another neck back to third place.

Sovereignty paid $17.96 to win, $7.50 to place and $5.58 to show.

Second-place Journalism paid $4.94 and $3.70.

Third-place Baeza paid $8.38.

An all-sources record $349 million was bet during Saturday’s 14-race Kentucky Derby card, according to Churchill Downs, beating the previous record of $320.5 million set last year. All-sources wagering on the Kentucky Derby race itself was a record of $234.4 million, beating the previous mark of $210.7 million set in 2024.

Derby Week all-sources betting totaled $473.9 million, topping the previous record of $446.6 million set last year.

Saturday’s official Kentucky Derby attendance was 147,406, a decrease from last year’s 156,710.
