Social media users quickly responded to Sovereignty’s winning run in the 151st Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs in Louisville.

Some saw his defeat of the favorite, Journalism, as the opportunity for some interesting political commentary.

“Sovereignty just defeated Journalism in the 151st #KentuckyDerby, which feels like a metaphor for our times that I just can’t quite pin down,” Andy Walton @Notgruntled posted on the social media platform X.

“Sovereignty over Journalism is a result that sounds like @realDonaldTrump scripted it,” Daniel Reid wrote.

“The most Trumpian Derby of my lifetime — Sovereignty beat Journalism,” Bill Dalasio shared.

A user with the handle @ellycelly took it another direction: “‘Sovereignty’ won the one hundred and FIFTY FIRST Kentucky Derby you say…only beating out ‘Journalism’ you say…woke horse supports Canadian independence now and forever.”

Others saw some religious imagery in Sovereignty’s win.

“Sovereignty winning is a sign from Pope Francis,” the X user with the handle @SportsGirlSL wrote.

“A horse named sovereignty winning the Derby is a church member’s nightmare. The illustrations and jokes from the pulpit across America Sunday will be unhinged,” @NathanielM49471 posted.

“I don’t take the word SOVEREIGNTY lightly. There are no coincidences. This is a message to the world. The golden age is upon us,” X user @kathyolsen100 said.
