‘We want Big L!’ Petition seeks to roll back the clock on Lexington Legends’ name change
A Change.org petition challenging a recent name change by the Lexington Legends to the Lexington Counter Clocks has attracted nearly 900 signatures as of Thursday morning, urging the minor league baseball team’s management to reverse the change.
“The Lexington Legends name has become synonymous with baseball in our community. It is a name that has been embraced by fans of all ages and has helped to establish the team as a fixture in the local sports scene,” the petition reads. “Changing the name to the Lexington Counter Clocks would be a disservice to the legacy of the team and the community that supports it.”
After 22 years, the team announced Monday it “really needed a clean slate” and revealed it would now go by the Lexington Counter Clocks. In the announcement video, the team explained the inspiration for the name.
“There was a time when England was known for horse racing,” the video’s narrator explains. “Before we declared our independence, their horses raced on the grass. Running clockwise.”
The change also came with new logos: One being a clock swinging a baseball bat and the other of a player doing the same while seated backwards on a horse.
While the petition sympathized with the desire to start fresh, it called the name change the wrong move.
“We believe that this can be achieved without sacrificing the team’s established identity and legacy. We urge the management of the Lexington Legends to reconsider this decision and to keep the team’s name as it is,” the petition stated.
The Counter Clocks play at Wild Health field at 207 Legends Lane in Lexington. Play begins when the Atlantic League kicks off its season April 28.
