Legends complete sweep. See where they stand in playoff race.
The Lexington Legends are starting to enjoy the view from the top.
After completing a four-game sweep of the Kannapolis Intimidators on Monday night, Lexington’s minor league baseball team now holds a full two-game lead in the race for the South Atlantic League Southern Division’s second-half standings. The division winners from each half of the season advance to the SAL playoffs.
The Legends have not earned a playoff berth since 2006 and have not finished a full season above .500 since 2010.
With 19 regular-season games left to play, achieving the former is anything but assured, but the latter is almost a certainty. Lexington is 66-51 overall. The Legends are 29-20 in the second half, two games ahead of the Asheville Tourists and the Greenville Drive. Lexington won’t play Asheville again this season but closes the season with four games at Greenville.
Lexington has surged to the top by winning seven of its last eight games, including Monday night’s 3-1 win over Kannapolis at Whitaker Bank Ballpark.
Outfielder Kyle Isbel led the charge by going 3-for-4 with a home run, two RBI, a run scored and a walk. Right-hander Yefri Del Rosario (4-5) earned the victory with six shutout innings of two-hit ball.
The Legends had Tuesday off but start a seven-game road trip Wednesday that features three games at Hagerstown followed by four at Lakewood. Hagerstown is last and Lakewood first in the Northern Division.
