What we know about Carleton:
▪ The Ravens are a dominant force in Canadian men’s college hoops. Carleton beat the Saskatchewan Huskies 85-72 last season to win its third straight Canadian national title and its 16th in the past 19 seasons.
▪ Carleton head coach Taffe Charles has led the Ravens to the national title in three of the four seasons he has coached. The year Charles and Carleton did not win it all was 2019-20 — when the postseason was canceled by the coronavirus pandemic.
▪ In what it calls “The Can-Am Shootout,” Carleton will play four U.S. men’s college basketball teams in exhibition games this summer. In addition to Kentucky, the Ravens lost to Northeastern 104-91 Saturday; were drubbed 98-64 by Florida State on Tuesday; and will play Oregon on Aug. 23. Except for UK, the other games were all to be held at Carleton.
▪ In the loss to Northeastern, Carleton was led by 6-foot-2 guard Aiden Warnholtz with 22 points and seven assists. Connor Vreeken, a 6-5 guard, added 14 points; Reginald Seraphin, a 6-5 forward, chipped in 13 points and six rebounds; and Marjok Okado, a 6-1 guard, had 11 points off the bench.
▪ Turnovers killed Carleton in the loss to Northeastern. The Ravens lost the ball a robust 20 times compared to only eight miscues by the visiting Huskies.
▪ In the defeat to Florida State, horrid shooting did in Carleton. The Ravens went 22-of-75 on field-goal tries, a dreadful 6-of-38 on three-point attempts. Carleton did cut its turnovers to 17 vs. FSU. Wazir Latiff, a 6-1 guard, led Carleton with 13 points; Marjok Okado added 11 points and two steals. (For FSU, ex-Kentucky forward Cam’Ron Fletcher started and played 22 minutes, finishing with nine points and four rebounds).
▪ Among the high-level American teams Carleton has beaten in prior exhibition campaigns are Syracuse and Wisconsin.
