A closer look at Kentucky’s SEC basketball scheduling since latest expansion

The SEC announced Thursday morning the home and road opponents for the 2017-18 conference basketball season.

Defending league and tournament champion Kentucky will play home games against Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, Mississippi State, Missouri, Tennessee, Texas A&M and Vanderbilt.

The Cats will play road games against Arkansas, Auburn, Florida, LSU, Missouri, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas A&M and Vanderbilt.

Since the SEC expanded to 14 teams in 2012-13 with the addition of Missouri and Texas A&M, the conference has played an unbalanced 18-game schedule. Under the initial format, each school played one “permanent” opponent home and away each season while playing four others on a home-and-away rotating basis.

Starting with the 2015-16 season, the league designated three so-called “permanent” opponents for each school. Kentucky’s three are Florida, Tennessee and Vanderbilt. The Cats play the other 10 league schools at least once and play two schools twice on a rotating basis.

Under the two formats, Florida is the only opponent that Kentucky has played twice each season since the league expansion.
