Preakness: Bob Baffert vs. D. Wayne Lukas in a record books rumble
Get out the erasers. Saturday's 143rd running of the Preakness Stakes has a chance of re-arranging the Thoroughbred racing record books yet again.
Justify's victory in the Kentucky Derby two weeks back made trainer Bob Baffert a five-time winner of the event, snapping a second-place tie with D. Wayne Lukas, who has won the race four times. Baffert is now behind the late legendary Calumet Farm trainer Ben A. Jones, who was credited with six Kentucky Derby victories from 1938 through 1952.
Baffert and Lukas each have six Preakness victories, placing them tied for second behind R. Wyndham Walden, who won the race seven times in the late 19th century — 1875, 1878, 1879, 1880, 1881, 1882 and 1888.
Baffert has the 1-2 morning-line favorite for this year's Preakness in Justify. Lukas has a pair of Preakness entries in Bravazo and Sporting Chance. Owned by Calumet Farm, Bravazo finished sixth in this year's Kentucky Derby. Sporting Chance did not run in the May 5 race.
Overall, Lukas leads all trainers in Triple Crown victories with 14. That's just one ahead of Baffert, who could pull into a first place tie with a Justify victory on Saturday.
Here is the list of trainers who have won five or more Triple Crown races — the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness and the Belmont Stakes:
