The three-point defensive numbers -- not good
VMI made 19 of 38 three-pointers on Sunday. Winthrop has made 13 of 28 threes with 2:43 to go. That’s 32-of-66 behind the arc over the last two games for the Kentucky defense. Not good. UK is leading, though, 85-68.
Kentucky leads Winthrop 76-53
There is 7:45 left here at Rupp Arena the day before Thanksgiving. UK’s assist total is now up to 20 on 29 field goals. Herro now with seven assists. Kentucky is shooting 60.4 percent from the floor. The Cats are 7-of-17 from 3. Winthrop is shooting 41.7 percent. The Eagles are 10-of-22 from three for 45.5 percent. So UK’s three-point defense still needs work.
Kentucky’s lead 68-47 with 11:50 left
UK has 17 assists already. Tyler Herro leads the way with six. PJ Washington has four. Immanuel Quickley has three. Kentucky also enjoying a 31-15 advantage on the boards over the smaller Eagles.
UK starts second half on an 11-0 run
Cats now lead 62-40 with 15:47 left. Winthrop’s Jermaine Ukaegbu fouled out with 16:32 left.
Offensively, Kentucky played well the first half
The Cats shot 60 percent from the floor, making 18 of 30 shots. UK was four-of-10 from three and 11-of-16 from the foul line. The Cats also had 11 assists on their 18 field goals. Tyler Herro led the way with four assists. PJ Washington was credited with three assists. And, again, Kentucky dominated the boards, this time 25-11.
Defensively, still not much improvement on three-point defense. After VMI’s sizzling 19-of-38 beyond the arc on Sunday, Winthrop made seven of 17 three-point attempts for 41.2 percent in the first half. Three different Eagles made two three-pointers.

Winthrop has now made seven threes in the first half
Kentucky has a 44-34 lead with 2:51 left in the first half, but Winthrop has made seven of 16 three-point attempts. This after VMI was a record 19-of-38 from three-point land on Sunday night. The players say John Calipari has emphasized three-point defense of late, but the visitors have made 43.8 percent of their three-point shots this half.
Kentucky up 36-23 with 7:24 left in 1H
Keldon Johnson leads the Cats with eight points and four rebounds. UK is 13-of-20 from the floor for 65 percent. And Kentucky enjoys a 15-7 advantage on the boards. Winthrop has made nine of 22 shots for 40.9 percent. The visitors are four-of-10 from three-point land.
Kentucky off to a hot start shooting
Kentucky leads Winthrop 26-16 at the 11:41 1H TV time. UK is 11-of-15 from the floor for 73.3 percent. The Cats are four-of-eight from three-point land. Wintrhop has committed five turnovers to four for UK. Also, it’s an animated John Calipari on this day before Thanksgiving.
Kentucky leads Winthrop 14-8 at first TV time
Keldon Johnson leads the way with six points after hitting two three-pointers. After VMI made 19 three-pointers on Sunday, Winthrop is two-of-four on threes so far. UK 14, Winthrop 8 at the 15:27 mark of the first half.
