Podcast: Discussing the Kentucky Derby’s move to September

Churchill Downs made it official on Tuesday morning, confirming that the 146th Kentucky Derby has been pushed back from the first Saturday in May to Sept. 5, 2020, because of the coronavirus pandemic.

“We feel confident that we are going to run the Kentucky Derby,” Churchill Downs, Inc. CEO Bill Carstanjen said Tuesday, “and we’re going to run it with a crowd.”

Given the announcement, I talked to my colleague Ben Roberts of the Herald-Leader about the decision and what it means for the traditional Kentucky Derby preps, the Triple Crown and even the Breeders’ Cup, scheduled for Nov. 6-7 at Keeneland in Lexington.
