Podcast: Dave Kindred on Adolph Rupp and the racism question
The recent open letter from a UK African American and Africana Studies faculty group calling for the renaming of Rupp Arena has rekindled the debate over race and the legendary Kentucky basketball coach Adolph Rupp.
To get a feel for what it was like during Rupp’s time as coach, especially in the late 1960s, near the end of his career, I talked to Dave Kindred, who started his columnist career at the Courier-Journal. Dave went on to write for the Washington Post, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the National, Sporting News, Golf Digest and many other publications. He has authored several books, including “Sound and Fury” about Muhammad Ali and Howard Cosell, and “Basketball: The Dream Game in Kentucky.” He won the prestigious Red Smith Award in 1991.
In our conversation, Dave talked about his life now in Morton, Ill., and his memories of writing about Rupp and Kentucky basketball, plus the current issue of whether to rename the arena.
