Randall Cobb has a new job. How will the former UK star do at the SEC Network?
News broke Thursday that former Kentucky wide receiver/quarterback Randall Cobb has joined the SEC Network as a television studio analyst on college football.
“We are thrilled to welcome Randall to the SEC Network crew,” Pete Watters, a coordinating producer for the SEC Network, said in a news release. “His experience and knowledge of the game, both from playing at Kentucky and in the NFL, will be such an asset to our football coverage.”
You ask: How will Cobb do?
My answer: That’s a silly question.
He’ll do great. Actually, I suspect he’ll do better than great. Cobb has all the traits the job requires. He’s smart. He has a sense of humor. He’s great on camera. And he has the work ethic and competitive spirit that has carried him through a 13-year NFL career.
A very recent NFL career, which makes him a valuable addition to the network’s coverage. For example, during one Thursday afternoon segment Cobb spoke to the new college football rule that allows electronic communication between a coach on the sideline and the quarterback via the quarterback’s helmet. That’s something that the NFL has been doing for awhile.
An NFL writer picks Cobb’s five greatest moments
Cobb posted on social media that he’s not entirely sure his NFL career is over. After eight seasons with the Green Bay Packers, Cobb played one year with the Dallas Cowboys, one with the Houston Texans, and two more with Green Bay before appearing in 11 games last season with the New York Jets. In his career, Cobb has caught 630 passes for 7,264 yards and 54 touchdowns.
A three-year starter (2008-10) at Kentucky, the Tennessee native played quarterback and wide receiver for first Rich Brooks and then Joker Phillips. He rushed for 22 touchdowns and caught 13 more. He also passed for five touchdowns as a Wildcat.
He was always great with the media, friendly and honest. He could be fiery, but that’s a good thing. I remember early on in his career, Phillips, then UK’s offensive coordinator said of Cobb, “He’s a football player.” That proved to be correct.
Here’s another story from Cobb’s UK days. Back in 2010, he once stormed out of a Red Lobster in Lexington when he overheard a hostess dissing UK football. The worst part, according to Cobb, was that he was really looking forward to those cheesy biscuits.
“Congrats Red Lobster just lost a top customer,” he tweeted. “Man I really wanted some of those biscuits too!”
