College basketball on television: South Carolina looks to remain perfect
The SEC’s biggest surprise, undefeated South Carolina, travels to Alabama for a 9 p.m. game with the Crimson Tide as part of the college basketball television schedule for Wednesday night.
The 19th-ranked Gamecocks are 15-0 overall and 2-0 in the SEC under Frank Martin, who was just 45-54 in three seasons at Columbia before this year’s breakthrough season. Of course, before coming to Carolina, Martin was 117-54 in five seasons as the head coach at Kansas State.
South Carolina is the nation’s eighth best defensive team, according to Ken Pomeroy’s numbers. The Gamecocks are holding opponents to 37.4 percent shooting from the floor. That ranked 10th nationally through Tuesday night’s games.
Alabama is off to an 0-2 SEC start under first-year coach Avery Johnson, who has going through a baptism by fire as far as the league concerned. Alabama opened its conference schedule last week at Ole Miss, which was opening its brand-new basketball arena. The Rebels won 74-66. Then Bama lost 77-61 to Kentucky on Saturday in Tuscaloosa. Now, the Tide faces the unbeaten Gamecocks.
As for the rest of the schedule, No. 9 Duke is at Clemson, which is coming off a 66-62 upset win over visiting Louisville. ESPN2 has tht game at 7 p.m.
With No. 1 Kansas losing at West Virginia on Tuesday night, No. 2 Oklahoma could move into the top spot. First, however, the Sooners have to get past Travis Ford and Oklahoma State. ESPNU has that game at 9 p.m. Then the Sooners play -- yikes -- West Virginia.
Was curious about West Virginia facing No. 2 Oklahoma after knocking off top-ranked Kansas. Naturally... https://t.co/PM8t1IiVGo
