Just up the road in the Queen City, No. 1 Villanova meets No. 5 Xavier in Wednesday night’s top college hoops matchup, scheduled for a 7 p.m. tip on Fox Sports 1. It’s the sixth time in history but the first time since 1999 that Xavier has hosted the AP’s No. 1 ranked team.

Villanova thrashed the Muskies 95-64 in the first meeting way back on New Year’s Eve. Ryan Arcidiancono scored 27 points as five Villanova starters hit double figures that afternoon. Villanova shot 63.2 percent.

Jay Wright’s team is 24-3 overall and 13-1 in the Big East. The Wildcats have won seven straight since an 82-76 overtime loss to Providence back on Jan. 24. Ken Pomeroy ranks Villanova’s defense as the fourth-most efficient in the nation.

Xavier is also 24-3 overall, but 12-3 in the league. Besides the Villanova loss, X has fallen at home to Georgetown and on the road at Creighton, 70-56 on Feb. 9. The Muskies have won three straight since that slip-up heading into this marquee matchup.

Xavier guard Edmond Sumner suffered a concussion early in the first Villanova game. The freshman is averaging 11.4 points and 25.3 minutes per game. Sumner scored 22 points in Xavier’s 88-70 win over Georgetown last Saturday. He had 20 points in the 90-82 win over Marquette earlier this month.
