It is the time of year for off-season football lists. Several websites are ranking college football teams from No. 1 through No. 128 for the 2016 season. Athlon has added an additional ranking. Writer Steve Lassan has ranked head college football coaches from No. 1 through No. 128.

Bobby Petrino fares well in the ranking. Lassen has the Louisville coach at No. 12 in his rankings.

“If this list was just based on the X’s and O’s ability of a coach, Petrino would be ranked No. 2 in the ACC over Clemson’s Dabo Swinney,” Lassan writes. “In his second stint with the Cardinals, Petrino – regarded as one of the nation’s top offensive-minded coaches – is 17-9 over the last two seasons and has Louisville projected to finish among the nation’s top 25 teams for 2016.”

Mark Stoops does not fare quite as well, however. Laseen has the Kentucky coach at No. 83.

However, while 2016 isn’t necessarily a make-or-break year for Stoops, getting to a bowl game is a reasonable expectation.

Athlon on Mark Stoops

“Stoops is making progress at Kentucky, as the Wildcats have recorded back-to-back 5-7 finishes after a 2-10 record in 2013,” Lassan writes. “However, while 2016 isn’t necessarily a make-or-break year for Stoops, getting to a bowl game is a reasonable expectation. The roster talent has improved over the last four years, with Kentucky recording four straight top-40 signing classes.”

Here is Lassan’s Top 10:

▪ 1. Nick Saban, Alabama

▪ 2. Urban Meyer, Ohio State

▪ 3. Jim Harbaugh, Michigan

▪ 4. Mark Dantonio, Michigan State

▪ 5. Bob Stoops, Oklahoma

▪ 6. Gary Patterson, TCU

▪ 7. Jimbo Fisher, Florida State

▪ 8. David Shaw, Stanford

▪ 9. Dabo Swinney, Clemson

▪ 10. Brian Kelly, Notre Dame
