Southern Miss football’s losing streak to SEC teams
When Southern Miss arrives at Commonwealth Stadium on Saturday for the 7:30 p.m. season-opener against host Kentucky, the Golden Eagles will be trying to win their first game against an SEC opponent since 2000.
Since blanking Alabama 21-0 in Tuscaloosa on Sept. 16, 2000, USM has lost 13 consecutive games to SEC opponents, all but one of those on the road. The latest was a 34-16 home loss to Mississippi State in last season’s opener.
It should be noted that Todd Monken’s club rebounded from that loss and posted a 9-5 record, including an invitation to the Heart of Dallas Bowl (where USM lost 44-31 to Washington). Now new head coach Jay Hopson will try and snap the long losing streak against the SEC.
Here is a look at the USM streak. You’ll notice that it starts with five straight losses in five straight years at Alabama.
