Great American Pie Contest, Patriotic Concert start Fourth of July festivities
The Great American Pie Contest and Ice Cream Social got Fourth of July festivities off to their traditional start Monday afternoon as a crowd gathered at the Fifth-Third Pavilion in Cheapside Park to sample entries in the annual competition.
The big winners were Allison Baughn, whose Princess Peach Pie won in the made from scratch division, and Stephanie Jeter, whose Tipsy Caramel Chocolate Pie with Pecans won the semi-homemade division and prettiest pie. A surprise downpour chased many attendees under the pavilion cover after the winners were announced, many still finishing free slices of pie or ice cream from Sav’s Chill.
Celebrations moved over to Transylvania University Monday evening for a patriotic concert on the Morrison Lawn by the 202nd Army Band of the Kentucky National Guard.
