We must remember our history

Thanks for publishing March 11 University of Louisville professor Russell Vandenbroucke’s balanced and eloquent analysis of atrocity in war. He rightly points out that atrocity occurs in all wars because soldiers “behave abnormally when stressed abnormally amidst unremitting violence.”

He does well to remind us that we do not preserve or teach our own history well, even very recent history. It is appalling that many of today’s students are unaware of the My Lai massacre, or indeed of any particular events of the misguided Vietnam War. Let us deliberately recall what happened on March 16, 50 years ago. Let us pray for peace and vote for peacemakers.
