Summer fun in Kentucky

Use our recreation guide to plan your Kentucky summer of hiking, biking, swimming and more.

Expand All

The arrival of Memorial Day weekend carries with it a joyous certainty – namely, that summer, despite the fact the seasonal solstice is still over three weeks away – has arrived.

With that, thankfully, comes a flood of live music outings of almost every size, setting and style. And with the COVID-19 seemingly contained (for now), clubs, theatres, arenas and amphitheaters are boasting their most colorful and crowded concert schedules in several years.

That, of course, brings us to our annual Summer Concert Guide, which this year encompasses over 240 live performances taking place within a two-hour drive of Lexington between now and Labor Day. There is something for everyone on the calendar, from Alicia Keys to ZZ Top.

Some main events will be absent this year, however. Of local note, the Festival of the Bluegrass and Railbird are missing.

The lingering effects of COVID are causing the former to be called off for the third year in a row.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has affected individuals and communities in different ways,” reads a statement on the Festival of the Bluegrass’ website. “Our personal circumstances are such that we do not have the bandwidth to make this event happen.”

Railbird is also a no-go this summer, but is set to restart in June 2023, moving from its original home at Keeneland to the Red Mile. Its sophomore outing last year – specifically, its Saturday itinerary – was hampered by long lines for water stations, leading to longer lines of frustrated patrons.

Other absences include the cancellation of Cincinnati’s Bunbury Music Festival for the third time in as many years.

“Due to a variety of circumstances and complications resulting from the pandemic these last two years, it has been very difficult to get a small music festival off the ground,” festival organizers stated on Twitter, “from booking to supply-chain issues and obtaining adequate staff in order to ensure safety.”

Louisville’s Forecastle will be back, though, for the first time since 2019, but in an entirely different time spot – this weekend. The three-day festival at Waterfront Park usually takes place in mid-July.

As for everything else listed here, the usual suggestions apply: If any of the shows you plan on attending require a road trip, call the venue or check its website (see our accompanying list of venues and contact info) for any last-minute cancellations or postponements.

Also, keep in mind most of the ticket prices listed here, expensive as some of them are, exclude various “VIP” and “gold” seating offers that send the cost of premium seats skyrocketing – sometimes, even past the $1,000 mark. For the sake of economic sanity, we’re sticking with the base prices.

Otherwise, it’s time to hit the road (even if that road keeps you in the familiar confines of Lexington) and strike up the bands. Summer has arrived.
