The Jonas Brothers bring surprise guests on stage. Who could be at Lexington show?
The Jonas Brothers are coming to our hometown on Nov. 1, as the trio brings their “JONAS20: Greetings From Your Hometown” tour to Lexington.
The pop-rock band, which got their start on the Disney Channel but quickly rose to commercial success, is celebrating two decades of music.
Tickets are still available for the concert at Rupp Arena, starting from $40, according to Ticketmaster.
As part of the tour, the brothers have been bringing out special guests at some — though not all — tour stops. So far, guests have included Demi Lovato, Switchfoot, Kelsea Ballerini, 5 Seconds of Summer and All Time Low.
Here’s our best guesses for who could join the band in Lexington.
Kentucky natives
Tyler Childers
Monica: Any mention of “musicians” and “Kentucky” has to include Tyler Childers. It’s perhaps the most obvious choice, but for good reason. Childers’ next show isn’t until Nov. 15, and in July 2024, he came on stage at Rupp to perform with Olivia Rodrigo, so I’m not counting him out.
Caroline: I was at that show! They did “All Your’n,” it was electric. As Monica points out, Childers is (as far as tour dates go) wide open, and who wouldn’t want to ring in November with one of New Jersey’s most famous fraternal musical acts?
Wynonna Judd
Monica: Wynonna Judd was one of the openers for Childers’ April concert in Lexington, and her performance was so fun. I’d love to see her get on stage and bring that energy with the Jonas Brothers.
Caroline: Judd is a Kentucky music great who experienced success in family band of her own. Plus, this tour seems to be about celebrating nostalgia; it would be a great way to remind those at Rupp Arena of Judd’s talent, and possibly even introduce her to a new generation.
Sturgill Simpson
Caroline: See, now this one is just wishful thinking. I’m not sure how big of an overlap there is between Sturgill Simpson fans and Jonas Brothers fans, but prior to this tour I’d have said the same thing about fans of Dashboard Confessional or Alessia Cara. The artist sometimes known as Johnny Blue Skies is a talented guitarist, and I’m in favor of a cool dance-battle-style solo.
Monica: Not only is Simpson a Kentucky native, but he lived in Versailles. It doesn’t get much more “Greetings From Your Hometown” than that!
Cage the Elephant
Monica: I lived in Tennessee for three years, and one of the first questions I got asked when I moved and people learned I went to Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green was, “So do you know Cage the Elephant?” If we’re thinking outside country music options, Cage is certainly a possibility. They’re also on tour right now, but their last show is on Oct. 30, just in time to make it to Lexington.
Caroline: If I were a conspiracy theorist ...
Ella Langley, Lainey Wilson, Megan Moroney
Monica: These are some of the most popular new(ish) names in country right now. Their rise feels similar to Kelsea Ballerini’s, who the Jonas Brothers brought out already on this tour, so it makes sense to me that we could see one of them in Lexington.
Caroline: I’d say someone along the lines of Langley, Wilson and Moroney would be a home run for the Jonas Brothers. I echo Monica’s sentiment about how similar their rise feels to that of Kelsea Ballerini. In 2021, on the Jonas Brothers’ “Remember This” tour, Ballerini was chosen as the opener, and I was surprised; I didn’t think it made much sense, but, once the show began, I really enjoyed it. Fun country music delivered by a strong voice, somehow, really works with the Jonas Brothers’ catalogue.
The Fray, The Script, The Goo Goo Dolls
Monica: Something about these bands performing together just makes sense to me. We’re already tapping into that nostalgia with the Jonas Brothers, why not go a step further with one of these bands?
Caroline: Exactly! And, as previously stated, the Brothers have already welcomed Switchfoot on this tour. Something about revisiting the aughts and the early 2010s would just feel right. These bands each also have at least one hit that everybody will know. Nothing like “Iris.” It’s always a good time.
Wildcard picks
Miley Cyrus
Monica: If we’re dreaming big, and throwing out names of who our dream surprise guests would be, I have to say Miley Cyrus. Yes, there’s a lot of history (Cyrus and Nick Jonas dated as teenagers with the couple name Niley), but in an interview about her career earlier this year, Cyrus let us know she’s still team “Niley for life.” Cyrus and the Jonas Brothers have a song together on “Lines, Vines and Trying Times,” and I’d love to see it (or any other song she wants to sing) live.
Caroline: The song in question? “Before the Storm.” I think I still know all the words. Besides, for those of us who grew up considering “Hannah Montana” appointment television, this would be one of the biggest crossovers since the Jonas Brothers appeared in the show’s second season during an episode called “Me and Mr. Jonas and Mr. Jonas and Mr. Jonas” in 2007. If Miley came out at Rupp, and the quartet wanted to do “We Got the Party,” it’d pair nicely as a second song in the surprise set.
Jason Derulo
Caroline: The man can sing, the man can dance, and he was one of the few performances that didn’t weird me out while watching “Cats” (2019). I walked out of there calling for Derulo to be cast in a Broadway production, but joining the Jonas Brothers for a performance of his first-ever No. 1 hit “Whatcha Say” seems like another place for him to shine.
Monica: Listen, I’m not going to pretend I have a good reason for hoping we see Jason Derulo on Saturday night, other than I think it would be fun. And really, what more can you want from a concert than a good time?
