Virtual gallery: See Lexington artists’ emotions in their coronavirus work

The coronavirus and the shutdown has been inspiring Lexington artists to create new works, even in isolation.

They bring to life our deepest fears, losses, anger, loneliness and hope for post-pandemic life.

Below are the works of 27 local artists. Some pieces are dark, like Cheryle Walton’s “Reaching,” depicting a woman staring out at a world she can no longer touch. While others offer hope, like Cate Wagoner’s painting “Kentucky Quilt”.

Like many around us, the pandemic is putting pressure on the arts community. LexArts and the Blue Grass Community Foundation have joined forces, creating the Arts Resilience Initiative Fund to provide financial relief for artist and arts organizations impacted by the coronavirus outbreak. You can donate or apply by going to bgcf.givingfuel.com/artsresilience.

The Herald-Leader is expanding its coverage of how the Lexington arts community is dealing with and recovering from COVID-19 through a grant from the Blue Grass Community Foundation. “Blue Grass Community Foundation invests in the arts because the arts matter,” said Lisa Adkins, president and CEO of the community foundation. “The arts uniquely reflect our community, serve as a critical connector and are essential to our quality of life.”In addition to this funding, the Community Foundation has joined with LexArts to create the Arts Resilience Initiative to help Bluegrass artists and arts organizations cope with the severe impacts of the pandemic. Contributions can be made at bgcf.org.
