He’s accused of opening fire in a Lexington KFC. His father is separately accused of murder.

A 39-year-old woman says in court records that she was the target of a man accused of firing shots inside a KFC restaurant over the weekend. But a co-worker of the woman was shot instead.

The 18-year-old — Lawrence Westbrook IV — accused of opening fire in the KFC about 10:30 a.m. Saturday during a conflict with a woman is the son of a 40-year-old man who was charged in September with murder in the shooting of a 39-year-old woman found on the side of Tates Creek Road the day after Christmas, police said. The man charged in the December killing is Lawrence Westbrook III.

Rachel Jean Preston died of multiple gunshot wounds. There was no dating or domestic relationship between Westbrook III and Preston, police said. Westbrook III has prior gun and drug convictions, and before he was charged with Preston’s homicide, his wife obtained a protection order during a divorce, according to court records.

After the KFC shooting Saturday, the self-described target sought an emergency protective order against Westbrook IV for three children in her custody, according to court records. The petition for the EPO does not specify the woman’s relationship to Westbrook IV, but he is listed as the parent of one of the three children in her custody.

Westbrook IV turned himself in Sunday and he was charged with the one count of first-degree assault and five counts of first-degree wanton endangerment, said Lexington police spokesman Sgt. Aaron Greenleaf.

Westbrook IV went into the restaurant at 1494 Boardwalk, near Lexmark, and yelled for an employee to come to the front of the restaurant, police said.

The woman wrote in the protective order petition that when Westbrook IV went into the KFC, “he told me to come up there (to the front of the restaurant) to get my phone but I refused,” the woman wrote. “After I refused a couple of times I heard gunshots. ... When shots were fired, instead of him hitting me, he shot one of my co-workers.”

Westbrook IV used a handgun to fire several rounds to the rear of the kitchen, police said. A 40-year-old employee was hit in the ankle and she was taken to a hospital.

Six employees were in the restaurant at the time, police said.

The woman also wrote that Westbrook IV “has been abusive for a long time. I was always scared to do something because I didn’t know what he was capable of doing.”

The younger Westbrook’s bond was set at $10,000 on the assault charge and $5,000 on each count of wanton endangerment, for a total of $35,000. He was held in the Fayette County jail along with his father, Westbrook III.
