A dipped cone for less than $2? Check out National Ice Cream Month deals in Lexington
Sunday marks National Ice Cream Day, and many local parlors are enticing customers to come out and enjoy a cone with deals, discounts and brand new flavors.
In 1984, President Ronald Reagan proclaimed July as National Ice Cream Month and the third Sunday of July National Ice Cream Day. At the time, the Republican president called on the public to celebrate with “appropriate ceremonies and activities.”
The event also has a Kentucky tie. It was then-U.S. Sen. Walter Huddleston, a Democrat whom Sen. Mitch McConnell unseated in 1984, who sponsored Senate Resolution 298. That resolution mirrored another in the U.S. House and made it possible for Reagan to formally create National Ice Cream Day and National Ice Cream Month.
According to the International Dairy Foods Association, a trade group that represents the U.S. dairy and marketing industry, the average American consumes roughly 20 pounds of ice cream each year. That’s about 4 gallons. In 2021, ice cream makers produced more than 1.3 billion gallons of ice cream, according to the IDFA.
Sunday is also shaping up to be hot, with the forecast calling for a high of about 86 degrees, as of Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service. Here’s where you can beat the heat and celebrate National Ice Cream Day in Lexington.
