  • New soda version offers zero sugar and excludes aspartame as a sweetener
  • Company plans to expand zero sugar offerings across existing flavor lineup

Ale-8-One is releasing a zero-sugar edition of its popular and original soda flavor as a limited seasonal run.

Roxa Kola Zero will debut at select retailers on Sept. 22 as a six-pack of glass bottles. The soda is an iteration of Roxa Kola, the founding flavor during Ale-8-One’s launch more than 100 years ago, but with zero sugar and no aspartame.

Aspartame is an artificial sweetener used in food and beverage products, according to the World Health Organization. The sweetener was classified as possibly carcinogenic by the International Agency for Research on Cancer in a 2023 study.

Roxa Kola was created by Ale-8-One’s founder George Wainscott in honor of his wife, Roxanne. The soda company previously re-released the soda flavor in 2023, and its return was widely successful.

“Roxa Zero is something we knew fans wanted, and we are excited to deliver on this for them,” Daphne Price, director of product excellence and innovations for Ale-8-One, said in a news release. “With all things worthwhile, the process takes time to ensure we get it right.”

A limited edition of Roxa Kola Zero will be available when it goes on sale in less than two weeks. Price said Ale-8-One is working to make more zero sugar sodas across its lineup of flavors.

Ale-8-One’s regular rotation includes the original Ale-8-One, Ale-8 Zero Sugar, Cherry Ale-8, Cherry Ale-8 Zero Sugar, Heritage Ale-8, Caffeine Free Ale-8 Zero Sugar, Orange Cream Ale-8 and Blackberry Ale-8. Earlier this summer, Ale-8 launched a pawpaw flavor in collaboration with Kentucky State University.
