Woodford Reserve’s Double Double Oaked: A new way to get to get this coveted bourbon

You know a bourbon’s hot when they have to have a drawing for who can buy it. That kind of phenomenon has usually been reserved for the cult followers of Pappy Van Winkle.

Seems that Woodford Reserve’s Double Double Oaked has entered cult territory.

In recent years, it has sold out in hours at the Kentucky distillery. Leaving a lot of bourbon lovers with empty glasses.

Now for the first time, Woodford Reserve will have a national sweepstakes for people who can’t make the trek to Versailles at the drop of a hat.

Woodford Reserve Double Double Oaked is an annual release that sells out quickly at the distillery. This year there is another way to get a bottle of this limited bourbon — a lottery drawing for a chance to buy a bottle.

“Double Double Oaked has such a cult following, which makes it very difficult for consumers to get their hands,” master distillery Chris Morris said. “This sweepstakes will allow more of our fans to have the chance to try this special release.”

How to enter Woodford Reserve Double Double Oaked lottery

You can enter the new sweepstakes online at woodfordreserve.com Feb. 1-8. Winners of the lottery will be chosen at random and notified by Feb. 10. If you’re one of the lucky few, you will have until March 31 to come to the distillery to get your bottle.

The annual release of the limited quantity bourbon also will begin at the distillery at 7785 McCracken Pike at 10 a.m. Feb. 1, two bottles to a customer.

Due to COVID restrictions, a reduced number of guests will be allowed inside the gift shop and face masks are required.

Limited quantities also will be available at select Kentucky retailers.

What makes Double Double Oaked so special? Woodford Reserve ages its Double Oaked an addition year in a second, heavily toasted and lightly charred new oak barrel. That extra year creates a bourbon that is spicier than the original version, known for its sweeter taste and finish, according to Morris.

Double Double Oaked is 90.4 proof, with a suggested retail price of $49.99 a bottle.

According to the tasting notes for this year’s version, it has a nose of rich maple syrup, dark butterscotch, brittle caramel, bittersweet chocolate, burnt marshmallow and sweet hickory smoke, with a flavor of dried cherry and cranberry, blackberry jam and ripe apple, with a clove finish.
