A Lexington brewery was just named the top brewery in Kentucky, according to Yelp reviewers.

A Yelp list of the “Top brewery in every state in the U.S.” singled out West Sixth as the winner in the Bluegrass state.

West Sixth Brewing, at 501 W. 6th St., drew top marks from the online rating web site. Reviewers gave it a cumulative 4 1/2 stars, praising the porters and stouts as well as lighter beers too. The overall atmosphere — ample street parking, across from a park, historic neighborhood — also drew praise.

And it’s good timing, Lexington Craft Beer Week, which runs through May 15, is a great time to check it out and compare to the rest of the region’s strong beer game.

West Sixth locations, hours

West Sixth was founded in 2012 in the former Rainbo Bread Factory in downtown Lexington and now also has taprooms in Louisville, Frankfort and Newport. Beer is available on tap, in bottles and cans and in growler refills. It’s also sold in stores and in bars and restaurants throughout Kentucky and in Cincinnati.

And West Sixth has made social impact a part of its mission from the beginning: Earlier this year, the brewery celebrated raising more than $1 million in the decade to support non-profits and announced the launch of the West Sixth for a Cause Foundation to raise and donate even more. The Lexington taproom is open Sunday through Tuesday 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Wednesday and Thursday 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Friday and Saturday 11 a.m. to midnight.

And if you get hungry, Smithtown Seafood (a Ouita Michel restaurant) is tucked inside the building too and you can bring food into the taproom. Food trucks also park in the area.
