Lexington couple opening downtown bourbon tasting room for tourists

Lexington is getting its first downtown bourbon attraction.

Fresh Bourbon Distilling Co., which has announced plans to build a distillery in Lexington, is opening a bourbon and cocktail tasting room at 377 E. Main St.

The Fresh Bourbon Tasting Room will offer a sophisticated experience for tourists in a walkable location near major downtown hotels and restaurants, according to a news release. The attraction will open Sept. 2.

Gov. Andy Beshear and Lexington Mayor Linda Gorton planned to help open the tasting room at 1 p.m. Sept. 2.

Guests will be guided through a bourbon tasting and mixology session and can purchase fashion and lifestyle products selected by Fresh Bourbon co-founder Tia Edwards.

“For years, we have been diligently developing our bourbon and spirits line. We have been very intentional and deliberate in crafting our spirits — from the mash bills up — and we’re excited to share what we have created from our own space,” Edwards said in the release.

Fresh Bourbon Distilling Co., which is one of the few Black-owned Kentucky bourbons, was founded in 2017 by Sean and Tia Edwards. They launched their bourbon in 2020, produced in partnership with Hartfield & Co. Distillery in Paris. They announced in early 2020 plans to build a distillery near Lexington’s Distillery District; those plans were put on hold by the COVID pandemic, according to the governor’s office.

Fresh Bourbon uses a four-grain recipe that incorporates honey malt, according to the company, giving their bourbon a distinctive sweet and floral character. The bourbon is distilled in a copper pot-still and matured in a mix of barrel sizes from 6-gallon “nano” barrels to traditional 53-gallon barrels.
