New $500 holiday Kentucky bourbon from Chicken Cock honors ‘Prohibition-era history’
A revived whiskey brand with decades of history is releasing a new special edition.
Chicken Cock Chanticleer is a new commemorative from “The Famous Old Brand,” the slogan for the bourbon once known as the house whiskey of the Cotton Club. The brand was founded in 1856 in Paris, Ky.
Made today in partnership with Bardstown Bourbon Co., Chicken Cock straight Kentucky bourbon and straight rye whiskey were resurrected in 2012. Last year the brand put out its first limited edition holiday release, Chicken Cock Cotton Club Rye Whiskey.
This year’s version, Chanticleer, is a Kentucky straight bourbon finished in fine French Cognac barrels. It’s bottled at 112 proof and has a suggested retail price of $499. Each Prohibition-era replica bottle comes in a collectible tin.
“This luxury spirit and commemorative tin honor Chicken Cock’s Prohibition-era history and heritage,” said Matti Anttila, founder of Grain & Barrel Spirits, which owns Chicken Cock. “Chanticleer is the second edition in a collectible series of special limited-edition holiday releases, following last year’s Chicken Cock Cotton Club Rye Whiskey. This is a way for us to really shine a light on some of the great whiskey we’re making at Chicken Cock.”
Only 32 barrels of Chanticleer were produced with a recipe of 70 percent corn, 21 percent rye and 9 percent malted barley. The limited edition whiskey is available to buy nationally and online at chickencockwhiskey.com and at Caskers.com.
According to the tasting notes, it has a nose of ripe peaches, sweet cream and honey. On the palate, the taste is tannic with vanilla and cherry, plums, candied dates and banana flambe, with a finish of hot caramelized sugar, melted butter and fresh citrus zest.
