A new ice cream is coming to Lexington, and it promises to pack a punch.
Joe Brett’s Ice Cream, made in Winchester, is opening a store in The Square in Lexington. It’s different from other “boozy” ice creams, according to owner Joe Brett Langley.
Langley said that his company actually has a federal rectifier’s license to make the product with actual spirits, rather than infuse or blend then flash-freeze. He uses a secret process, but the result is all-natural, and even kosher, he said.
“It took 20 years to bring this market,” Langley said. “It’s 5% alcohol, 10 proof, better than Häagen-Dazs, but it’s got real booze in it.”
Flavors include butter pecan bourbon, chocolate bourbon, coconut rum, mint julep bourbon, mocha chocolate moonshine, peach whiskey, peppermint moonshine and vanilla bourbon.
There also are four additional rotating alcohol flavors, plus a dozen non-alcohol flavors.
Langley said he hopes to open the Lexington store, which will go into the spot vacated by Vinaigrette Salad Kitchen, by mid-June.
The shop also will serve specialty coffee drinks. And he plans to introduce new items soon.
Joe Brett’s Ice Cream also is available in Liquor Barn stores in Lexington and will be coming soon to Keeneland, he said. Langley also is hoping to bring his ice cream to Churchill Downs and Gatlinburg, Tenn., and to begin franchising stores soon.
