New Lexington bakery has custom cookies but the cinnamon rolls are getting raves
Lexington baker Daniel King says he’s been baking his entire life, but he only started doing it professionally last year, when he launched a home-based bakery.
Now he’s gone bricks-and-mortar.
The Futile Bakery is a new gourmet cookie and cake shop that just opened at 399 Waller Ave., Suite 130.
King built a following on social media for his decorated sugar cookies and has a selection on hand in the store. You can also order custom designs online as well.
He also does decorated “celebration” cakes for birthdays, weddings and special events.
One of the biggest hits with customers: His large cinnamon rolls, made fresh every day. King said that he had been making the cinnamon rolls for years for his family, perfecting his recipe and technique.
“I do a classic one, and a chocolate babka roll and a seasonal one that will change monthly. Right now it’s a pumpkin roll,” King said. “The secret ingredient is time. The dough is rested overnight.”
Also available daily: Macarons in a variety of flavors and drop cookies.
Gluten-free versions of some cookies also are available.
Another hit: His Kentucky cookies. He’s done carrots, sideways Christmas trees, pumpkins and now candy corn Kentuckys.
For his cakes, King offers a variety of flavors and icing options in addition to decorations like unicorn horns and flowers. But he doesn’t do “shape” cakes, strictly round in layers and tiers.
King said that he offers flavors for his decorated sugar cookies, too, “but people just want the vanilla.”
