COVID claims a downtown scoop shop. But you can still find their gelato in Lexington

Another Lexington ice cream place is making some big moves. Spotz Gelato is closing its location on 128 North Broadway after only nine months.

The downtown location opened in September 2019 where Clawdaddy’s lobster roll restaurant used to be.

Owner Beth Richardson announced on Facebook on Wednesday that the downtown store, which has been closed since March because of the coronavirus pandemic, will not be reopening. She said the closure was because of the COVID outbreak.

Instead, Richardson said, they will have a weekend pop-up at 727 National Ave. in The Warehouse Block every weekend.

“Starting next weekend (Friday 6/26) one of the Spotz trucks will be parked all weekend in the lot next to our friends at @mirrortwinbrewing and @rollingoven. We will be open Friday 6-9 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday 3-9 p.m.,” she posted.

Spotz Gelato also is expanding into a new city: A location will open June 26 at 545 Main St. in Shelbyville. Spotz, which built a following at festivals and events with its pink food trucks, also has locations in Georgetown and in Versailles. The Georgetown location at 135 West Main St. is open inside; the Versailles location at 148 Court St., is only open for carryout at the moment.

The move comes as Crank & Boom Craft Ice Cream closed a location at The Barn at The Summit at Fritz Farm. Crank & Boom is moving to Clays Mill Rd., where Lyles BBQ used to be, and will operate as a pop-up for a few weeks while the restaurant location is renovated.
