Super Bowl restaurant specials: Wings, sliders, loaded potato skins and Blanton’s
What is it about big sporting events that makes us want to eat the least healthy food?
With one of the biggest athletic affairs of the year happening Sunday with Super Bowl LV, you can bet people will be reaching for chips and dip, wings and sliders, pizza and party food.
Although big Super Bowl parties are not a good idea at the moment because of the COVID pandemic, you can still get the flavor of the event in dishes sized for a family.
Here are some Super Bowl specials from local Lexington restaurants available for the big game:
Joella’s
101 Cochran Rd. and 2305 Sir Barton Way, joellas.com; Joella’s offers Big Wings that come in six different heat levels including Southern (no heat), Tweener (medium heat) and Fire-In Da-Hole (so hot you have to sign a waiver.) You can get them by the plate or order from the catering menu for the whole team.
Selma’s Catering
720 Henry Clay Blvd., selmascatering.com, 859-071-2763; You can get football-shaped cookies, burgoo by the quarter or gallon, Buffalo dry rub wings or teriyaki wings for $1 each, loaded potato skins $1.50 each, hot ham & cheese, cheeseburger and pulled pork sliders by the dozen, chili, dips and loads of snacks. Order by Thursday, pick up Friday or Sunday.
Oscar Diggs
155 North Limestone, odiggs.com, 859-523-8305; Oscar Diggs will offer a carry-out special for the Super Bowl featuring drumsticks and fries with special dippers. Plus, they will have bottles of their own Blanton’s Barrel Pick on hand.
Dupree Catering
201 E. Main St., dupreecatering.com, 859-231-0464; Dupree has Game Day Party Platters that serve 8-10 for $150, with deviled eggs, “Everything But the Potato Dip” and house fried chips, party rolls, sriracha Buffalo chicken bites, barbecue-glazed meatballs and dessert bites.
J Render’s Southern Table & Bar
3191 Beaumont Centre Circle, jrendersbbq.com, 859-533-9777; Pre-order recommended because they will run out of wings: You get 50 smoked wings for $59, includes 1 pint dressing and 1 pint bbq sauce of choice. Or get 100 Smoked Wings for $110. You can also get 6, 12 and 20 Wings at menu price. Order a trio of dips — smoked Buffalo chicken dip, spinach and artichoke dip and beer cheese, served with tortilla chips, for $30.
The Mousetrap

DaRae & Friends

Or get a hot dip trio for $40 with hot creamy corn dip, artichoke sausage spinach dip and Buffalo chicken dip. She also has charcuterie boxes for $50. Pickup available until 2 p.m. on Saturday, or arrange delivery.
