This summer, Lexington will have a new treat to try: A new frozen custard chain is coming to town.

Andy’s Frozen Custard, which is headquartered in Springfield, Mo., is expanding into Kentucky and is planning on opening its first location in Lexington at 1200 S. Broadway.

The ice cream shop hopes to open sometime in the summer, according to a spokeswoman. Andy’s is planning on opening several locations around the state, she said.

According to plans filed with the city, the new restaurant will be 1,845 square feet and have a wrap-around drive through that enters and exits off of American Avenue. There also will be a parking lot between American and Burley Avenue with 39 parking spaces.

There will be benches outside for sitting and enjoying custard treats.

Andy’s Frozen Custard joins other Lexington ice cream and frozen treat spots Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers, Culver’s, Graeters Ice Cream, Shake Shack, Steak ‘n Shake, BurgerFi and Coldstone Creamery, among others, as well as local options including Crank & Boom Ice Cream, Sorella Gelateria, Sav’s Gourmet Ice Cream and Freshie’s Ice Cream & Soda Fountain.

The menu at Andy’s includes “concretes” made with custard blended with items to mix in such as cookies and candy. And “the Jackhammer,” a Andy’s custard concrete with a hole in the middle filled with a topping such as hot fudge or caramel.

Andy’s Frozen Custard specializes in items like the Triple Chocolate Concrete, featuring chocolate frozen custard blended with chocolate chip cookie dough and melted chocolate chip.

Frozen custard is also available by the pint and quart, as well as in sundaes and shakes.

Andy’s Frozen Custard was founded in 1986 by John and Carol Kuntz, who say the key is that their custard is always made fresh. The chain now has more than 85 locations in 14 states.

The James Brownie Funky Jackhammer at Andy’s is vanilla frozen custard blended with creamy peanut butter and baked-fresh daily brownies then filled with hot fudge down the middle.

What is the difference between custard and ice cream? According to Andy’s, it is creamier because it has more butterfat and is churned very slowly to keep air from mixing into the custard as it freezes.
