This new Lexington soft-serve ice cream shop will take you to your happy place

When Lexington ice cream maven Toa Green and her husband Mike opened their new venture, BoBi Cones, they started with a limited menu.

Which is good, because you will want to try everything. And with only three flavors (four, if you count swirled chocolate custard and vanilla) it’s doable in one visit.

BoBi Cones, which opened in late November in Palomar Center near Malone’s, specializes in soft-serve ice cream, but this is anything but the typical free-with-your-meal version.

As Toa Green explains, this is 10 percent butterfat, which makes it silky and creamy without the icy mouthfeel that some soft-serve has.

Start with the plain vanilla to really appreciate that texture, then add in some chocolate custard before you move up to strawberry, which is the only other flavor on hand at the moment.

Green said that she plans to add at least two more at the ice cream shop, and would love to add a pineapple like a Dole Whip.

The soft serve comes in a small cup or cake cone for $3.50, or a regular cup or waffle cone for $4.99. You can also get cones dipped in chocolate for $4.99.

If you’re keeping it simple, try the soft-serve in a taiyaki cone. These are called “fish cones” but there’s no fish in them. Instead, they are made of vanilla waffle cone batter baked in the shape of a fish with its mouth open. The soft-serve goes in the cone, which is crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside. It’s a popular Asian style for street food, Green said. A small fish cone is $4.50 and the larger size is $5.50.

You can get the soft-serve with toppings, including rainbow sprinkles, Fruity Pebbles, mini marshmallows and more, or dipped in premium chocolate in three flavors, dark chocolate, gold chocolate or ruby chocolate. Each topping is $.75 extra.

For an extra special treat, there are three sundaes on the menu to choose from, each $6.50:

Gimme S’Mores is vanilla soft serve, dark chocolate sauce, gold chocolate sauce, graham cracker dust, mini marshmallows and Teddy Grahams for garnish.

BoBi Cones is named for the Greens kids, Bodhi and Bindi.

Just as with their Crank & Boom ice cream, Green said they hope the new restaurant will take customers back to their childhood happy places. For her, that’s a cup of strawberry with marshmallows.

“This represents all that’s good and fun with our kids, and this in honor of them,” she said. “They love ice cream.”
