Midway Italian dining spot sold. Details on upscale restaurant coming from new owner
Big changes are coming to the Midway dining scene. A popular restaurant has closed but another is on the way.
Mezzo Italian Cafe and Provisions, the casual pizza and sandwich concept from local chef Mark Wombles, closed Dec. 31 after almost six years. Wombles opened Mezzo in early 2016 at 131 E. Main St. in Midway, the former home of 815 Prime.
He sold the restaurant to fellow Midway restaurant owner J.P. Gibson.
“I still have Distilled on Jefferson and Heirloom and we’re going to focus on those right now,” Wombles said.
Gibson, who owns the Brown Barrel and Blind Harry’s in Midway, said Tuesday that he is opening a new upscale restaurant that will be called Gibson’s.
“It’s a gorgeous building, with custom hardwood floors and a tavern in the basement,” Gibson said. It also has a patio with covered seating for warm weather.
It’s expected to open in late January, Gibson said, after some minor remodeling.
The chophouse-style menu will include steaks, seafood, custom pasta and salads as well as wood-fired pizza.
Gibson’s will be open for dinner seven days a week and for lunch Wednesday through Sunday, Gibson said.
