Local ice cream shop expanding to South Lexington with dirty sodas, waffle cone booth

Freshie’s, a locally owned ice cream parlor and soda fountain, is expanding and bringing the retro fun to South Lexington.

A new second location will be coming to the South Elkhorn Village at 4379 Old Harrodsburg Rd. in early 2023, according to Annie Williams, who owns Freshie’s with her husband, Ted Martin.

They opened the first Freshie’s at 3851 Kenesaw Dr. in Hartland in November 2020 and it was a big success with its hand-dipped super premium ice cream and nostalgic soda fountain, even though it opened in winter during the COVID pandemic.

“We think that it’s such an appealing concept. It’s very family friendly and wholesome and appeals to all ages,” Williams said. “We like that we’re kind of in a neighborhood, the Hartland Shopping Center is so hidden.”

For their second location, she said, they looked for something that will still have that neighborhood feel but with more visibility and found it out Harrodsburg Road.

The shopping center is home to restaurants like Ramsey’s Diner, Brick Oven Pizzeria, El Charro, Maty’s Authentic Peruvian Cuisine and more.

New Freshie’s location to be different, but similar to Hartland

The second location of Freshie’s will be in a corner spot in South Elkhorn Village, near Ramsey’s Diner and several other restaurants. The sign has been up for a while but construction has been slow. The ice cream parlor is expected to open early in 2023.

Williams said the new Freshie’s will be larger but keep the same feel: “Like a modern twist on a retro concept,” she said. They will keep the ‘50s “doo-wop” music going and add more fun. Everything for dining in is served in glass with actual spoons, she said.

The new location will have 32 flavors of ice cream, including lots of non-dairy options, Williams said.

The cane sugar soda fountain bar will have more bar stools and be able to serve more drinks.

Like “dirty sodas,” which are soda with flavored syrups and cream over cube ice.

“It’s very big in Utah,” she said. And dirty sodas have been making the rounds on TikTok, too.

They also plan to expand the selection of coffee drinks, including affrogatos (ice cream in coffee.) And they will have a special “waffle cone booth” where customers can watch the fresh waffle cones being made, then dipped in chocolate and fancy sprinkles.

Eventually, Williams said, she hopes to add alcohol for more grown-up dessert options, too.

Hours for the new location will be similar to the original Freshie’s location in Hartland, which is staying open.
