Owner explains why Lexington ice cream shop BoBi Cones closing

When a popular Lexington ice cream entrepreneur announced on social media that she plans to close one of her stores, the question for many customers was “What happened?”

Toa Green, who operates Crank & Boom Craft Ice Cream with her husband, Mike, posted online that they plan to close their BoBi Cones soft serve store after Aug. 31.

“It’s been a great run but it’s time for us to say good-bye so our team can focus on other projects,” according to the post. “We are so grateful for each and every one of you that we have served and appreciate the support so much! We hope to see you in the next few weeks as we close this chapter.”

The Greens opened BoBi Cones, named after their two children, in 2021 in Palomar Center. Toa Green said at the time that the extra rich soft-serve, available in a cup or in a “fish cone” (waffle cone shaped like a fish) was a family favorite.

“This represents all that’s good and fun with our kids, and this in honor of them,” she said. “They love ice cream.”

In a substack post on Aug. 11, Green said that ultimately things just didn’t work out the way they’d hoped.

“So what happened was actually really simple. We tried the concept. We loved what we were able to produce. We had some bumps along the way that were out of our control and some within our control. But after being open almost 2 years, the concept didn’t perform as we needed it to. It was easy to know that our time, energy, and money could be spent in other areas of our life to better serve our family, our business and our team.”

She said that they are looking for a new business to take over their spot off Harrodsburg Road. And that team members have been offered positions at their other ice cream shops on Clays Mill Road and on Manchester in the Distillery District.

Green did not elaborate on what new plans they are working on yet.

She said that she feels “relieved, a little happy, and a little sad all mixed together. I am happy to put a stake in a ground and move forward. But I will miss my chocolate custard cone and walking into the cute little shop that we built.”

The last day for ice cream at the BoBi Cones location is Aug. 31.
