Lexington breakfast restaurant known for gourmet biscuits closes

A gourmet biscuit chain has closed its Lexington restaurant location after 2 1/2 years on one of the city’s busiest roads.

Signs on the doors of Maple Street Biscuit Company at 2270 Nicholasville Rd. said the restaurant was permanently closed. The signage that had once been above the restaurant's entrance lay on the ground the morning of September 18. It had been attached to the building the day before.

Maple Street Biscuit Company didn’t respond to questions about the closure. Neither did Cracker Barrel, which bought the restaurant chain in 2019.

Cracker Barrel not expanding Maple Street Co.

After acquiring Maple Street, which is known for fresh-made biscuit sandwiches like the Squawking Goat, with battered chicken strips, toasted goat cheese and scratch-made pepper jelly, Cracker Barrel said in May 2024 they were slowing expansion of the breakfast chain. They have about 60 locations across the Southeast U.S. There is still one location in Kentucky, in Florence. A Louisville location closed in 2023.

The Squawking Goat, a flaky biscuit with all-natural fried chicken breast, fried goat cheese medallion and house-made pepper jelly was a popular menu item at Maple Street Biscuit Co.

Lexington biscuit restaurants

The loss of Lexington’s only Maple Street Biscuit Street location does not mean there are no other options for fresh biscuits, many of which serve up biscuits and gravy.

Some locally owned breakfast restaurants that serve up homemade biscuits include Winchell’s, Doodles, Josie’s, Biscuit Daddies, Rise and Brine Chicken Biscuits and Keeneland’s track kitchen.

Of restaurant chains, Biscuit Belly has two locations, one on East Main Street and another off Leestown Road. Another popular place, Tudor’s Biscuit World, opened on New Circle Road in September 2020.
