Why is Lexington losing so many local restaurants? These 6 have recently closed

It’s been a tough couple of months for Central Kentucky foodies. The Lexington area has lost at least six restaurants since late December, including a popular burger spot, a place to grab steak sandwiches, a hot dog stand and more.

More than two dozen local restaurants closed in Lexington in 2025, and several closures have already been announced so far in 2026.

Restaurant closures seem to have increased nationally in recent years, with some chains declaring bankruptcy and other spots unable to bounce back after losing business during the early days of the pandemic.

Some people have also reduced their restaurant spending due to affordability issues, as restaurant prices are up 4% from January 2025 to January 2026, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Here’s a roundup of six restaurants in and near Lexington that have announced closures since late December.

Tolly-Ho

The last day of business for this burger restaurant was Dec. 31, 2025. Tolly-Ho opened in 1971 and changed locations multiple times before ending up along South Broadway. The burger spot was popular with University of Kentucky students and staff.

Bad Wolf Burgers

Bad Wolf Burgers also closed Dec. 31. The restaurant was known for its namesake burger, which featured a Cajun-seasoned patty topped with bacon, house-made beer cheese and onion straws, as well as a burger served on a glazed yeast doughnut.

Zim’s Cafe

Zim’s Cafe, which used to be a favored restaurant for breakfasts and lunch service, also held its last day of business Dec. 31. The restaurant’s owner told the Herald-Leader in December the loss of downtown workers following the pandemic hurt the business.

Joella’s Hot Chicken

The Lexington location of chain restaurant Joella’s Hot Chicken apparently closed Sunday, the Herald-Leader reported. The joint was also negatively affected by the pandemic and overcame a fire before its permanent closure this week.

Sam’s Hot Dog Stand

A Lexington location of chain Sam’s Hot Dog Stand closed Friday the 13th, almost four years after its opening. The restaurant was known for its famous chili sauce and reasonable prices, the Herald-Leader reported, and closed after issues with its landlord.

Columbia Steak Express closed Saturday. The restaurant was known for its delivery service and quality burgers, baked potatoes, salads, grilled chicken and sides.

The owner cited several reasons for the closure, including the pressures facing the industry.
