Why did this Lexington radio station disappear from the airwaves?
A Lexington-based FM radio station that played hits from the 1960s to the early 2000s went dark this weekend.
101.5 WLXX FM, known as Jack FM, is now off the air.
Owner Cumulus Radio, which owns 440 radio stations in 84 markets, did not immediately return emails asking for comment. Cumulus headquarters is in Atlanta, Ga.
Cumulus Radio also owns other Central Kentucky radio stations including News Talk 590 WLVK AM, Hot 102.5 WLTO FM, K 92.9 WVLK FM and Z-Rock 103.3 WXZZ FM.
Jack FM is no longer listed as a Lexington-based radio station on the Cumulus website. According to the Radio Insight, Jack FM debuted in 2018, replacing a country station.
A synopsis of Jack FM on a cached web page said: “We’re a very different kind of radio station. We don’t have DJs. We don’t take requests and we play whatever we want -- which by the way is music ranging from the late 60s to the early 2000s.”
A spokesperson for Cumulus Radio told LexRadioTV, who was first to report on the closure of the radio station, Cumulus was going through a strategic overhaul of its radio markets.
“As part of our ongoing efforts to optimize our portfolio and resources, Cumulus Corporate has identified certain stations that are no longer a strategic fit for our local markets. As a result, Cumulus has decided to turn them off for now while they identify the best path forward for those stations.”
