Attention, Hamburg shoppers: New stores, concepts coming to Sir Barton Way

Slowly but surely, changes are coming to Hamburg.

The new-to-market discount outdoor gear retailer, Sierra Trading Post, opened its doors at the end of May. The store will have two new neighbors by 2026, giving shoppers more options in one of Lexington’s most popular retailing centers.

Part of the TJ Maxx retailing company, Sierra is an “off-price” retailer known for selling active and outdoor products at at least 20% less than other department and specialty stores. According to its website, the store carries brands like Carhartt, Free People, prAna, Reebok, Eddie Bauer and more.

The store on Sir Barton Way in what was a Bed Bath & Beyond is Kentucky’s third location. Sierra also operates in Florence and Paducah.

The property’s owner and developer, Patrick Madden, told the Herald-Leader going into the store is like “going on a treasure hunt.”

“They don’t always have the same thing,” Madden said, but that’s part of the shopping experience.

He likened it to shopping at any other TJX store (TJ Maxx, Marshall’s, Home Goods, HomeSense) and he’s glad to have another outdoor retailer in Lexington.

“Sierra is committed to providing communities with everyday low prices on high-quality apparel, footwear and gear from the trusted brands they love,” said Sierra’s Assistant Vice President and Marketing Director Amanda Johnson in a news release.

“With our new Lexington store, we’re thrilled to offer shoppers access to everything they need to be active without overspending.”

Next door, Skechers is still planning to open its first standalone store in Lexington. The popular shoe brand is on track to open its second Kentucky location by year’s end. There is one Skechers store in the Oulet Shoppes of the Bluegrass in Simpsonville where the retailer sells a wider variety of its shoes that are available in stores that carry the brand.

On the other side of the Skechers, in what was the Buy Buy Baby store, will be Lexington’s second Fresh Market.

The specialty grocery chain is “geared toward higher end products,” Madden said, and has a reputation for selling premium hand-trimmed meats and seafood, organic produce and other gourmet items along with prepared meals and baked goods.

It will be “tight,” Madden said, for the store to get open by January, and he anticipates a grand opening for some time in the first quarter of 2026. Madden said the Hamburg location will be larger than the one on Lansdowne Shoppes on Tates Creek Road and is a new prototype version of the store.

A new store design and concept for The Fresh Market was introduced in 2022. As part of its plan, the grocery chain proposed new stores and renovations to existing locations have a more simple layout for customers to find items and that stores offer entirely new lines of products, too: That includes fresh vegetables in microwavable steamers bags, an in-store coffee shop and a variety of other exclusive items.

The three storefronts on Sir Barton Way in the same strip as Half Price Books, Value City Furniture, World Market and Staples have been empty since 2023 when the Bed Bath & Beyond parent company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and vacated the shopping center.

“I couldn’t be happier with the mix of tenants for these stores. It’s the perfect mix,” Madden previously told the Herald-Leader. “It should increase everybody else’s sales as well.”

In another part of the Hamburg area closer to Meijer, a former Frisch’s Big Boy could soon be the site of a medical marijuana dispensary. The establishment comes as the private sector mobilizes following Kentucky’s launch of a medical marijuana program earlier this year.

Two Arkansas-based entrepreneurs behind the project said they’re already working to remodel the interior of the restaurant situated between Sir Barton Way and Man O’ War Boulevard.

The team said it is still seeking approval from the city and is aiming to open the 5,500-square-foot dispensary with a drive-thru in mid-November.
