As the federal government shutdown dragged on Monday, passengers at Blue Grass Airport were beginning to feel the effects of ordered flight capacity cuts by the Federal Aviation Administration.
Lexington’s Blue Grass Airport spokesperson Amy Caudill confirmed several canceled flights.
“We do have cancellations today. As of now, we have five outbound flights and two inbound flights that have been cancelled. The cancellations are spread out among Delta Air Lines, American Airlines and United Airlines,” Caudill told the Herald-Leader in an emailed statement Monday morning.
After weeks without pay, more air traffic controllers are calling out sick, putting the country’s airline industry under increasing strain during the longest government shutdown in U.S. history. Last week, the FAA announced a plan to cut flights at 40 top airports, and those cuts will be increasing this week to as much as 10% by Friday, Nov. 14.
Blue Grass Airport is not on the initial list, but that doesn’t mean it’s spared from canceled flights. Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport and Louisville’s Muhammad Ali International Airport are included on the FAA’s list.
FlightAware, a popular website for tracking flights, reported at least 3,846 delays within, into or out of the U.S. Monday. There were at least 1,719 flight cancellations, the website reported.
