Lexington will soon have four COVID-19 testing sites as new cases, demand for tests jump
Lexington will soon have four free coronavirus testing sites after seeing a surge in the number of new infections in July, Mayor Linda Gorton said Tuesday.
“The number of tests administered in Lexington is increasing,” Gorton said. “Our goal is to provide as much free, public access to testing as possible. Many thanks to the community partners that have supported and hosted this effort.”
Kevin Hall, a spokesman for the Lexington-Fayette County Health Department, said the department has received reports of long lines for tests. “With the increase in positive cases, more close contacts require testing,” Hall said.
There were more new infections of novel coronavirus in July than in March, April, May and June combined.
Lexington will soon have four free public testing sites: Southland Christian Church, 2349 Richmond Road; Consolidated Baptist Church, 1625 Russell Cave Road; Walgreen’s testing location at 2296 Executive Drive; and the city’s mobile neighborhood testing program, which has moved to various locations depending on where there are outbreaks or clusters of cases.
A Kroger testing site at Bluegrass Community and Technical College closed last week due to the start of classes at the community college.
COVID-19 testing will now be offered four days a week at Consolidated Baptist Church. This week, testing at Consolidated will be available 9 a.m.-4 p.m., Wednesday; 11 a.m.-7p.m., Thursday; 12-8 p.m., Friday; and 9 a.m.-4 p.m., Saturday. In future weeks, testing will be offered 9 a.m.-4 p.m., Monday through Thursday at Consolidated. No appointment is necessary. Drive-up and walk-up testing are available.
The mobile testing program has been operating in the Cardinal Valley area. It will move to a new location, which will be announced soon, city officials said.
Drive-thru testing is available at the Southland Christian Church Richmond Road campus. Tests are conducted from 9 a.m.-4 p.m., Monday through Friday. No appointment is necessary.
Drive-thru testing is available seven days a week at the Walgreen’s testing location, which is at the corner of Winchester Road and Executive Drive. Online registration is required at walgreens.com/coronavirus.
City and health officials also said that many doctor’s offices, including urgent treatment clinics, are also offering tests. To find out more about available testing go to: kycovid19.ky.gov.
